Since You Asked

Q: You’re coming home soon; are you more scared or excited?
A: Excited. We’ve loved traveling, but after 9 months, there’s been a perfect storm brewing that’s gotten us ready to sleep in our own bed again:

1. We aren’t loving one of our last destinations - Vietnam.

2. We’ve been sick back to back to back. First Dave got a parasite. Then Emily a sinus infection. Then Dave a cold.

3. The aforementioned parasite from Vietnamese food has made our favorite hobby (eating) much less appealing.

4. When you don’t have a job for this long, you start to feel a little unproductive. We know this doesn’t make sense and that taking this trip is incredibly productive in so many ways, but it’s hard to shake the American work ethic/brainwashing.

5. We’re missing family and friends and cooking and Ben and Jerry’s.

Q: What was your favorite place (so far)?
A: Indonesia. It’s cheap, the people are friendly, the scuba diving is world-class, and with several thousand different islands to explore, our two-month visa wasn’t nearly enough. You can explore an untouched frontier, and then head over to Bali for some creature comforts. We’ll be back.

Q: How many languages do you speak?
A: One-ish. High school Spanish probably doesn’t count. The thing is, we visited 11 different countries, and within each of those countries there are sometimes hundreds of languages spoken. There was no way to keep up, but we felt it was important (and courteous) to make an effort. So we just learned the basics: hello, thank you, please, sorry, how much does it cost, and that’s too expensive.
